About Rube's Steakhouse and Meat Company

History Overview:
1973 - The original "Grill Your Own" Rube's Steakhouse opens in Montour, Iowa
1976 - Mark Scheid joins Rube's as the primary steak cutter
1992 - Rube's Meat Company opens in Montour, Iowa and begins shipping steaks
1993 - Rube retires and Gary, Jeff, and Matt Anderson buy the restaurant
1999 - Expansion continues with a second restaurant opening in Waukee, Iowa

“Since Rube’s first opened it was obvious that the one feature that could not be compromised was the quality of the steak, not only the quality of the meat but the quality of the cut as well.
In a small town in central Iowa, where Rube’s began, I doubt we could have attracted a nation-wide following of folks selecting and grilling their own steak – even though this is half of the fun – if that steak wasn’t something pretty darn special.
Not all USDA Choice or Prime graded beef are necessarily equal, but if you are not willing to sacrifice quality for cost you can get the best of the best, age it right, cut it right and that’s what we are committed to.”
- Mark Scheid, Meat Company Manager

Rube’s began in 1973 when Glen Rubenbauer, “Rube,” opened up a tavern in the small-town of Montour, Iowa. Things were going well, but this entrepreneur wanted to start doing something new and innovative. A friend suggested that he start serving steaks, but Rube thought he’d take it a step further. He decided to let the customers grill the steaks themselves. Rube teamed up with some local merchants and began buying beef for his legacy. Customers could choose from a 26 oz. T-bone, 28 oz. Sirloin, 22 oz. Rib eye, or 32 oz. Ham. All of these steaks came with one free drink, salad bar, potato, and bread – all for $6.95. His philosophy was to provide a good steak and a good drink at a reasonable price, and word quickly spread about this unique concept.

In 1976, Rube’s employed Mark Scheid to cut these quality USDA inspected, premium steaks and customers couldn’t get enough! People would come to eat and then buy steaks to grill at home and give to friends and family.

The demand for the steaks became so great that in 1992 Rube’s Steakhouse branched out and built Rube’s Meat Company, located across the street from the restaurant. Now these delicious hand-cut premium steaks could be shipped across the entire continental U.S.

In 1993, Rube retired and Gary, Jeff, and Matt Anderson bought the restaurant. They have had, and continue having, many visions for the betterment of the establishment. A perfect example is the addition of a new Rube’s Steakhouse in 1999, which is located in Waukee, Iowa.

Since its tiny tavern beginning, Rube’s has grown to seat nearly 520 people with over 15 entrees from which to choose and has been named as “one of the 8 favorite places in the world” to visit by the Boston Globe and recipient of the Iowa Beef Backer Award.

Rube’s most recent recognition, and one we are very proud of, is the Travelocity “Local Secrets, Big finds” award. Straight from the local mouths, Rube’s of Montour has been recognized as a top hot spot in the state by residents of Iowa.
